Woooo!! 20,000!!!!

October 25, 2009 at 10:52 pm (Awards Season, Uncategorized) ()

Well, 20,165 while I write this. As promised there will be a nice big post documenting the anniversary of this blog…but not now.

I should have planned it better and got a load of photos ready but I’m not the most organised person on the planet, and I’m not that far from the least organised person either. I will celebrate 20,000 visits, in due course, probably by the end of the week, once I get my two assignments out of the way.

Thankyou to the people who wander in and out of this place without so much as commenting, thanks to those who come here via Photobucket having been seduced by Chris Pine and or Christian Bale, thanks to the regular visitors the Kickette girls and Kickette Twitterati. Oh..I’m going all Gwyneth at the Oscars or Miley at the Nickelodeon awards…thankyou, thankyou, thankyou. May this blog continue to bring you the best rants about football, film and TV, may it keep you aware of my celebrity obsession and above all may it continue to make you laugh, swoon or click the ‘x’ at the top of the window screen.

Thankyou…And the music starts playing.

The Oscars

February 22, 2009 at 6:18 pm (At the Movies, Awards Season) (, , , , )

I’m pretty miffed off that because of the time zones and the fact that tomorrow is a college day for me I can’t stay up and watch the whole of the Oscars. But I can rest assured that if the Brits do dominate, I won’t hear the end of it until Tuesday morning.

Here’s the list of nominees (for the more important catergories or the ones I’m interested in) and my prediction.

Best pictureslumdog_millionaire1
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Frost/Nixon
Milk
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire

Prediction: Slumdog Millionaire.

Its quite simply the best film I’ve seen in a long time. Besides, Slumdog has already won all the other best picture awards so if it doesn’t tonight I’ll not bother with the Oscars next year. I also have s sneaky feeling they might award it to Benjamin Snorefest.

Best director
Danny Boyle – Slumdog Millionaire
Stephen Daldry – The Reader
David Fincher – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Ron Howard – Frost/Nixon
Gus Van Sant – Milk

Prediction: Danny Boyle

Wholly under rated director who seems to have finally got the award committees attention with Slumdog. But again, it could go to Ron Howard for Frost/Nixon which in itself is quite a good movie. I’m a politics student so naturally I watched it.

Best actor
Richard Jenkins – The Visitor
Frank Langella – Frost/Nixon
Sean Penn – Milk
Brad Pitt – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Mickey Rourke – The Wrestler

Prediction: Toughie…er…Should be Mickey Rourke but could be Pitt or Penn.

Mickey Rourke’s performance in The Wrestler has been raved about for months and he also won the BAFTA for Best Actor. I know its not logical using the BAFTA winners as a prediction but I think he may just get the award tonight. The only reason I said Brad Pitt was because the Academy loves him and while he is a normal actor in my eyes to some people he’s God. Sean Penn could also cause an upset other than that I think this one is definately Mickey’s.

the_reader_1213101cBest actress
Anne Hathaway – Rachel Getting Married
Angelina Jolie – Changeling
Melissa Leo – Frozen River
Meryl Streep – Doubt
Kate Winslet – The Reader

Prediction: Kate Winslet

This one throws up surprises all the time. On first view its Kate Winslet all over but then Meryl Streep is in there and she’s nothing short of amazing whatever the film is so she could crash Kate’s party. Anne Hathaway has come a long way since Mia Thermopolis (I love those movies) and Rachel Getting Married is a winner with the critics. I thought although she did well, the character was limited but hey ho. So I think it should be Kate Winslet but the only upset could come from Meryl Streep.

Best supporting actress
16oscar-amy-adams-doubt1Amy Adams – Doubt
Penelope Cruz – Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Viola Davis – Doubt
Taraji P Henson – The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Marisa Tomei – The Wrestler

Prediction: Amy Adams/Penelope Cruz

Eeek!! Two Doubt actresses! Amy Adams was the name on the leaked Oscar list so I’m going to go with that. But again, Penelope Cruz won the BAFTA for her performance in Vicky Cristina Barcelona so I think if Amy doesn’t win then the winner will almost certainly be Penelope.

Best supporting actor
Josh Brolin – Milk
Robert Downey Jr – Tropic Thunder
Philip Seymour Hoffman – Doubt
Heath Ledger – The Dark Knight
Michael Shannon – Revolutionary Road

Prediction: Heath Ledger

I don’t want to imagine what the reaction will be if Heath Ledger doesn’t win this one. There should be no upset unless the Academy want to annoy people. That said, if they are reluctant to award the gong posthumously to him, its between Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Robert Downey Jr.

Best original screenplay
Happy-Go-Lucky
Milk
Wall-E
In Bruges
Frozen River

Prediction: In Bruges

In Bruges won this one at the beginning of the month in London so I’ll stick with that. But I hope Happy-Go-Lucky wins it.

Best adapted screenplay
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Doubt
Frost/Nixon
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire

Prediction: Slumdog Millionaire

Have you watched it? If you have there’s your answer.

Oscars Winners List Leaked

February 21, 2009 at 12:46 pm (At the Movies, Awards Season) (, , , , )

America can’t keep a secret. In the last couple of days AIG leaked a quite hilarious insurance claim form and of course there were the leaked photographs of Rihanna’s face after the Chris Brown attack.

Now, it seems they’ve leaked the full list of tomorrow night’s Oscars winners. At the moment it isn’t known whether or not the document is official but its already causing a stir with many of the representatives of the ceremony moving quickly to deny that such a document exists.

article-1151166-0396f1a6000005dc-566_224x691

My only critism about this list is that if it is true but they want to keep the Oscars a surprise, then they could change the winners and that could mean trouble. This week at the BRITs it was alleged that the committee system leaked Paul Weller as the winner of the Male Solo Artist award and as a result William Hill Bookmakers lost £20,000 due to a sudden influx of bets on Mr Weller. They may want to avoid such a loss again.

For me however, the Oscars this year is kind of the most predictable one yet. Kate Winslet will have to win for The Reader because she was exceptional in it and she’s already won a couple of awards for it anyway and Mickey Rourke’s performance in The Wrestler has been raved about for a good couple of months before its general release so by default he should win Best Actor. Supporting Actor has to be Heath Ledger because no one is daft enough to not award him for his scene stealing performance as the Joker which has now become part of motion picture history and rightly so. And if there’s any justice in the world, best Picture should go to Slumdog Millionaire which was probably the best film I’d seen for a long time.

Alas, I won’t be able to watch the whole ceremony because of the invisible enemy also known as the time zone. However, I will watch all the Live on the Red Carpet stuff on E! because I love listening to the stars talking about ‘who they’re wearing’ and I love all the amazing dresses that I will never be able to afford or look good in.

I’ll also watch every other news channel here because British film has done amazingly well this year and we have to share the newsreaders’ excitement. So much for me trying to curb my celebrity obsession.
